Why shouldn't I use a standard Fujitsu Stylistic P-867 computer?

Because the ADR EFB is modified specifically for aviation use. The new P-867 screen has been improved. This, along with ADR’s exclusive Night Flight dimming feature, for viewing the charts at night, makes the FG-4000 EFB the best choice. The system also comes bundled with the components required to support Jeppesen Chart updating. The Flight Command software functions as the ‘Air Traffic Controller’, allowing you to quickly navigate from application to application.

What does the Dual Mode Flight Command System Software do for me?

Flight Command software allows you to run multiple applications in a protected operation environment while in-flight. The Flight Command application is a software shell that is more streamlined than the standard Windows/Explorer version. The software provides user-friendly editor software for the Start Menu and Checklist updating. The utilities pop-up menu items include a battery meter, pen-calibration, and links to other important programs.

I am a current JeppView subscriber updating to JeppView FliteDeck. What do I need to know?

Your current serial number will work, but only until the anniversary of your JeppView subscription. At that point, you will be required to reinstall JeppView FliteDeck with the serial number that was provided with it.

Can I view enroute charts on the Electronic Flight Bag?

The EFB is fully compatible with JeppView FliteDeck from Jeppesen, which offers this feature on version 3.0. You will need to add GPS to your Electronic Flight Bag if you want the moving map capabilities.

Can I print my approach plates using the Electronic Flight Bag?

Yes. Any USB, IRDA, or PC-CARD (PCMCIA) compatible printer will connect directly to the Electronic Flight Bag. Some PC-CARD printers can be powered directly through the PC-CARD cable, eliminating the need for an external power source for the printer.

How do I update my JeppView Charts with the Electronic Flight Bag?

Every 14 days you will get a CD from Jeppesen. First, connect the CD-ROM cable to the CD-ROM drive, then the CD-ROM cable to the EFB. Insert the update CD and wait for the CD to initialize. Now, run JeppView or JeppView FliteDeck, and it will automatically perform the update.

Can I run GPS & Moving Maps on the Electronic Flight Bag?

Yes. If you don’t own a GPS device currently, you can purchase a USB GPS antenna; we recommend you stick with quality over price. If you do own a hand held GPS, you can plug it into the optional ruggedized serial interface available for the Electronic Flight Bag. This serial cable has a DB9 pin male connector with screw down for secure connection. Contact your GPS dealer and ask him for a DB9 pin female connector. This cable will plug into your GPS and connect to the DB9 connector on the Electronic Flight Bag. If you own a panel-mount GPS and it has an RS 232C output, you can connect to the PCMCIA input. If you have 429 ARINC FMS GPS, you will need to purchase a converter from the Shadin Company. Please contact ADR for more information. Either way, you will need JeppView FliteDeck from Jeppesen. In this software there is a ‘Connect GPS’ option. Select this option and select your specific GPS from the pick list.

What peripheral options are available?

Click here for a list of EFB accessories. The mini-docking station is a nice item that provides standard peripheral support.

Can I run standard windows applications with my Electronic Flight Bag?

Yes. The Electronic Flight Bag is essentially an Intel processor based PC. You can select the WINDOWS button from the Start Menu, go into Windows, and load your application via the external CD-ROM Drive.

Can I use the Electronic Flight Bag as a laptop computer?

Yes. The combination of your wireless keyboard and a portfolio carrying case or mini-docking station for ease of use, provides laptop capability. The mini-dock provides standard peripheral support. Contact ADR for more details.

Will my wireless keyboard work with the Electronic Flight Bag?

Yes. The wireless keyboard works with the Electronic Flight Bag though it is not required for viewing approach plates. There is also a USB Keyboard available. Also, on our EFB as part of the Flight Command Software, there is an onscreen keyboard button.

Can I fly with the Electronic Flight Bag under Part 91?

Yes. The FAA does not specify what media form factor the approach plates must be in.

Can I fly with the Electronic Flight Bag under Part 121?

Contact your regional FAA representative.

Can I fly with the Electronic Flight Bag under Part 135?

Yes, but you will need to obtain a certification. Contact your regional FAA representative for requirements. Refer to AC120 EFB and the FAA handbook.

Can I turn down the brightness of my System for nighttime flying?

Yes. The Night Flight enhancement comes standard on every FG-3600 Electronic Flight Bag system. Its dimming capability allows the user to dim the Electronic Flight Bag down for nighttime flying.

Can I mount the EFB in my aircraft?

Yes you can. ADR has a universal mounting solution available. Contact ADR for more information.

Does the system run on battery?

Yes. However battery operation while in flight is intended as a back-up strategy to your primary power. The system requires 16 VDC at 3.75 Amps. Many pilots use ADR's DC to DC EMI certified adapter included with the EFB, which handles 12 - 28 VDC input and provides the required 16 VDC output.

I have an FG-3000. Can I use its batteries in my new EFB?

No. The new 3600 series EFB systems have a 3400mA battery (which you can use in the FG-3500). The FG-3000 only has two battery options: a 3-cell 1300mA and a 6-cell 2600mA, neither of which will work properly with the 3500 or 3600 series.

I have an FG-3500. Can I use its batteries in my new EFB?

Yes. The FG-3500 has a 6-cell 3100mA battery, which will work properly with the 3600 series. This will result in shorter battery life, though, as the 3600 series has a more powerful battery.

Can I run my personal software in EFB mode?

Yes. After loading your software in Windows mode, you can create a button on the Main Menu using the Start Menu Editor found through the Utilities button on the Main Menu. Note: Your third party software may not run correctly in EFB mode. Contact ADR's technical support for further assistance.

Can I access Windows in flight?

Yes. By making a deliberate request via the Flight Command software you may access Windows. The Flight Command software protects the user from unintentionally running programs other than those used in-flight. Approach and departure information only should be displayed for critical phases of flight.

What is the warranty on the Electronic Flight Bag?

The computer itself comes with a 3-year Limited warranty for parts and labor. This includes Ground shipping back to the User. Abuse to the system is not covered under warranty. Contact ADR, EDMO or your local dealer for warranty information on other components.

How is my Electronic Flight Bag serviced under warranty?

ADR's customer service, EDMO or your local dealer.

What is the calibration function?

The computer requires you to calibrate the touch screen to ensure that it knows exactly where you are touching the screen. This function may be found through the Flight Command software Utilities button on the START menu, by selecting Pen Calibration. Always follow the standard instructions as provided on screen as you are viewing the calibration section.

My POWER button does not seem to function properly.

This button is actually for suspend and resume, not power on/off. This button only functions to turn the system back on after a normal shutdown or after it has gone into sleep mode.

What should I do if my system should lock-up?

Using the tip of your stylus pen, press the Reset Button on the back of the unit, next to the felt pad. Refer to the EFB Hardware Manual for further details. This should ONLY be used if you cannot shutdown or restart your system by any other method. Contact ADR's technical support for further assistance.

Why does my screen turn itself off after a certain period of time?

Each Electronic Flight Bag system uses power management to conserve battery life. The default settings may be changed by selecting the Power Management button on the Utilities menu found on the START menu, then selecting the Power Schemes tab. These settings control when and how your system goes into Standby, turns off the Display screen, and spins down the Hard Drive.

My system has a blue Microsoft Scandisk screen and I cannot use my pen, why is this?

This occurs when the system is not properly shutdown. It is likely the system locked up and the reset button was used. It is recommended that you let scandisk complete and the system will boot up normally.

Does the system have any specific drivers loaded?

Each system comes preloaded with drivers for the CD-ROM drive, USB Floppy drive, the Ruggedized single and dual Serial I/O, Belkin USB to Parallel cable, ADR USB GPS Antenna, and the Hawking PN625TX 10/100 attached port PCMCIA network interface card.

Can I connect the Electronic Flight Bag to a network?

Yes. By purchasing a PC-CARD Ethernet adapter, you may setup the EFB on your network just as you would any PC. ADR recommends the Hawking PN625TX Fast Ethernet attached port card, since the drivers already exist on the system. Your other option is to purchase a mini-docking station that provides a 10/100 RJ-45 connection.

How do I enter a letter, since the Keypad is only numeric?

You could use the onscreen keyboard, or the Mouse/Pen feature. By selecting the Mouse/Pen feature on the top Menu Bar, the mouse goes from an Arrow to a Pen symbol. This allows you to hand write on the screen the characters required. The system will recognize the character written, and re-write it electronically. If it should incorrectly interpret your handwriting, simply draw a line backwards to erase a character.

How do I create a boot disk that operates the CD-Rom?

Start with a Windows 98 boot disk. Copy the atak365.sys and kmekatcd.sys files from the C:\drivers\cdrom\dos directory to the disk. Edit the config.sys file so it ONLY contains the lines: DEVICE=atak365.sys /mem=d000 and DEVICE=kmekatcd.sys /D:MSCD000. Edit the autoexec.bat file so it ONLY contains the line: A:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000. This process requires a minidock, floppy drive (not USB), and a Fujitsu CD-Rom. You may use a wireless or USB keyboard to type once the machine is booted. Please note that if you are using a USB keyboard, it must be connected prior to power-on.
